Soludo Declares Environmental Emergency In Anambra, Warns Of Growing Threat

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has declared a state of emergency on environmental issues, warning that erosion, flooding and land degradation pose a major threat to the state’s future.

Soludo made the declaration on Wednesday during a statewide broadcast in Awka to mark the 35th anniversary of Anambra State.

According to Ireporter Online, the governor also announced a renewed “Clean and Green Initiative” designed to encourage residents to take greater responsibility for protecting the environment and keeping their communities clean.

Soludo said the growing impact of gully erosion, flooding and the degradation of land had become too serious to be treated as isolated environmental challenges, noting that the problems were increasingly threatening homes, farmlands and communities across the state.

While highlighting his administration’s achievements in tackling insecurity, the governor described environmental degradation as “Anambra’s number one existential threat” and called for urgent collective action.

He urged residents to embrace environmentally friendly practices by planting trees, protecting waterways, avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse and ensuring that drainage channels remain clear.

The governor stressed that government efforts alone would not be enough to address the environmental challenges facing the state, insisting that residents must play an active role in protecting their communities.

Soludo said the state must move towards a greener and more sustainable future, with greater attention given to clean surroundings, healthy communities and protection against erosion and flooding.

He also used the anniversary broadcast to reflect on Anambra’s journey since its creation 35 years ago, saying the state had recorded significant progress despite the challenges it had faced.

The governor called on residents to remain committed to building an Anambra where people can live safely, businesses can thrive and future generations can enjoy a healthier environment.

His wife, Dr Nonye Soludo, also congratulated the people of the state, describing the 35-year journey as one defined by resilience, enterprise and determination.

She commended Anambra residents at home and abroad for their contributions to the development and reputation of the state, while expressing optimism that the state would continue to grow and prosper.

She urged residents to remain united in building a better future for the state and its younger generation.
