At an event in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, officially launched the Marshals, a unit formed from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), to address the menace of illegal mining and curb the smuggling of solid minerals abroad.

Alake emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring that prospective investors in the mining sector prioritize value addition to minerals before obtaining mining licenses. He reiterated that no mining license would be issued without a clear plan for value addition, such as processing and refining, to maximize the economic benefits for Nigeria.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori, Alake highlighted the significance of the Seven-Point Agenda for the ministry, which has placed the mining sector at the forefront of global attention. This renewed focus has attracted interest from the international community, leading to Alake’s election as the Chairman of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG) at the Future Minerals Forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Alake stressed that the support of both the executive and legislative arms of government has enabled the ministry to showcase Nigeria’s solid minerals sector on a global scale. He emphasized that with the formation of the AMSG, there is now a unified approach across Africa towards promoting local value addition in the mining industry.

The minister reiterated the government’s stance on prioritizing local value addition, stating that minerals must be processed within Nigeria to create more value and generate employment opportunities domestically. This strategic approach aims to prevent the exploitation of Nigeria’s mineral resources for the benefit of other countries while ensuring that local communities benefit from the extraction and processing of these resources.
