Requests for courtesy visits from prominent militant leaders and ethnic militias in the oil-rich region to Tinubu within the villa have been recently denied by the presidency.

This decision is believed to have stemmed from an incident involving the leader of the defunct Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF), Alhaji Mujarhedeen Asari-Dokubo, who visited Tinubu on June 16 of the current year.

Asari-Dokubo, a fervent supporter of Tinubu, endorsed and backed the president during the run-up to the 2023 presidential election.

However, his public statements and actions following his visit to Tinubu’s office raised concerns. Asari-Dokubo, speaking with State House reporters as he exited the villa, criticized the Armed Forces for their alleged involvement in economic sabotage such as crude oil theft and vandalism of oil equipment in the Niger Delta region.

This outspoken behavior was not well-received by Tinubu, especially since it happened immediately after their meeting.

The presidency, alarmed by Asari-Dokubo’s subsequent actions, felt that his public utterances and activities were becoming linked to Tinubu. The presidency was also troubled by the negative impact of his association with the president, particularly as it related to public perception and responses from notable Nigerians. Asari-Dokubo’s involvement in gatherings of armed youths and his confrontation with the Rivers State governor were especially concerning.

Consequently, the president decided to discontinue hosting ex-militant leaders and militias at the villa to avoid any negative implications arising from these associations. In light of the aftermath of Asari-Dokubo’s visit, individuals known for their involvement in the Niger Delta ethnic conflict and unrest in the oil industry had their requests for audience with the president declined.

Sources within the presidency revealed that the decision was influenced by the experience with Asari-Dokubo, as his visit led to unwelcome fallout and criticism of the president. Despite the relationship between Asari-Dokubo and Tinubu, the presidency determined that the negative repercussions outweighed the benefits of maintaining such connections.

However, Ajuri Ngelale, the special adviser on media and publicity to the president, has stated that he is unaware of the matter and the president’s directive, suggesting that any reports should be based on verified information rather than speculative assumptions.
