Edo Residents And Communities Embrace Obaseki’s Decision To Empower Traditional Rulers
In a significant stride toward grassroots development and community cohesion, the Edo State Government, led by Governor Godwin Obaseki, has taken a bold step to empower traditional rulers across the state.
The decision, driven by the implementation of a 1979 Law on local council administration, has sparked optimism and appreciation among Edo residents and communities.
The move, which translates into monthly allowances for traditional rulers in the 18 local government areas, marks a pivotal shift in governance dynamics. Governor Obaseki’s administration recognizes the pivotal role traditional leaders play in upholding social harmony, fostering peace, and promoting harmonious living within their respective domains. This initiative aims to amplify their capabilities to perform their roles effectively and efficiently.
Secretary to the Edo State Government, Osarodion Ogie, Esq., expressed that the decision was reached after thorough deliberations during an Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Benin City. The establishment of a traditional council within each local government area underscores the commitment to enhance community engagement and governance at the grassroots level.
At the heart of this transformation, the Oba of Benin remains the permanent chairman of the Edo State Traditional Council of Obas and Chiefs. This reaffirms the traditional institution’s significance in local governance and its critical role in upholding cultural heritage and identity. The Benin Traditional Council, acting as an umbrella body for Edo South Traditional Council, holds a central position in coordinating the efforts of traditional rulers across the region.
The decision to provide monthly allowances reflects a broader commitment to community well-being. Traditional rulers will now be better equipped to address local challenges, ensure social cohesion, and contribute to peaceful coexistence within their communities. By extending financial support, the Edo State Government acknowledges the vital contributions of traditional leaders in shaping the socio-cultural fabric of the state.
Moreover, the independence of the budget and funding allocated to the Benin Traditional Council underscores its unique position and responsibilities. This distinction emphasizes the importance of preserving cultural heritage and facilitating a more inclusive approach to governance.
Edo residents and communities are welcoming this decision with open arms. The empowerment of traditional rulers is seen as a vehicle for deeper engagement between the government and the people. It fosters an environment where community feedback and needs are addressed, allowing for tailored solutions to local challenges.
As the new structure takes root, traditional rulers are expected to collaborate with various stakeholders, expedite grassroots development, and maintain peace and order. The initiative aligns with Governor Obaseki’s vision of building a stronger Edo State through community-driven progress and unity.
In embracing this transformative step, Edo residents and communities are sending a resounding message of support for Governor Obaseki’s leadership and his commitment to nurturing the core values that make Edo State unique. As traditional rulers take on a more empowered role, optimism abounds for a future marked by inclusive development, cultural preservation, and a harmonious coexistence that will shape the destiny of Edo State for generations to come.
