Trump Loses Court Battle Over $2 Billion USAID Funds
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled against former President Donald Trump’s administration in its attempt to withhold nearly $2 billion in foreign aid. This funding was designated for international aid organizations that had already completed work for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)……..READ MORE
Trump’s administration sought to freeze the funds, aligning with its broader effort to reduce government spending. However, the Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, upheld a lower court’s ruling that the aid must be released. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett joined liberal justices in voting against Trump’s request.
The initial freeze, imposed when Trump took office, disrupted numerous global programs, affecting the delivery of essential medical supplies and food to vulnerable populations. Several aid organizations sued the administration, arguing that the prolonged withholding of funds would cause irreversible damage to their operations and beneficiaries.
Despite multiple lower court rulings ordering the release of the funds, the Trump administration sought emergency intervention from the Supreme Court. However, the justices found no justification for continuing the freeze. The ruling also requires the district court to clarify how the government must comply with the order.
Four conservative justices—Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh—dissented, with Alito strongly criticizing the decision. He argued that a single judge should not have the power to compel the government to spend billions in taxpayer funds.
It remains unclear how the ruling will impact contractors in Nigeria and other African countries that rely on USAID funding.
