Sources familiar with the conversation told the Post that Trump reminded Putin of America’s significant military presence in Europe, and expressed a desire to continue discussions aimed at resolving the Ukraine conflict.

Trump also spoke with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday, with both leaders agreeing to collaborate on efforts to restore peace in Europe.

The ongoing Ukraine war is expected to be a key issue during Trump’s presidency, as he has expressed a desire for a swift resolution to the conflict and questioned the multi-billion-dollar aid Washington has provided to Ukraine.

During the campaign, Trump repeatedly called for ending the war quickly, although he did not specify how. He has also criticized US financial support for Ukraine, suggesting it benefits defense contractors and foreign policy advocates, whom he accuses of promoting a pro-war agenda.

Trump’s communication with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday, which included his backer Elon Musk, and discussions with European leaders, signal a significant shift in US foreign policy regarding the conflict.

The Biden administration has pledged to continue supporting Ukraine until Trump’s inauguration on January 20, with National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stating that the White House intends to position Ukraine as strongly as possible both on the battlefield and at the negotiating table.

The Kremlin has responded cautiously but positively to Trump’s remarks, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov noting that Trump’s focus on peace is preferable to confrontation.

Trump’s stance could lead to pressure on Ukraine to consider territorial concessions, especially regarding Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014. Despite facing manpower shortages and concerns over US support, Ukraine remains firmly opposed to giving up any land.

Zelensky, along with many European leaders, has warned that conceding territory would only encourage further Russian aggression.
