Unimaginable Horror! 773 Corpses Fill Goma Morgues Amid Growing Catastrophe

The health ministry of the Democratic Republic of Congo announced on Saturday that as of January 30, hospital morgues in and around Goma contained 773 bodies following the assault by M23 rebels, who are backed by Rwanda.

Authorities reported that morgues are overflowing, with additional bodies on the streets, and indicated that 2,880 injuries were recorded between January 26 and January 30.

According to sources, the Tutsi-led M23 rebels captured Goma, the largest city in eastern Congo and the capital of North Kivu province—rich in gold, coltan, and tin—on Tuesday. The rebels then advanced towards Bukavu in South Kivu but faced resistance from Congolese troops, aided by the Burundian army, as of Friday.

The M23 group is the latest in a series of Rwandan-backed insurgent movements in Congo’s troubled eastern regions that have emerged following two consecutive wars stemming from Rwanda’s 1994 genocide.

The escalation has exacerbated a longstanding humanitarian crisis, causing hundreds of thousands to seek refuge in Goma due to the conflict between M23 and Congolese forces. Many more entered the city this month as the rebel threat escalated.

Humanitarian organizations faced significant challenges during the fierce battles for Goma’s control, struggling to assist overwhelmed hospitals and provide relief amid rampant looting of their resources and ensuing chaos affecting their personnel.

Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) reported on Friday that they only had a limited supply of medications left and were unable to assist individuals in displacement camps.

The World Food Programme announced the evacuation of its staff and the suspension of its operations.

The health ministry highlighted a critical shortage of medical supplies, ambulances, and body bags, with continued security threats hindering access to various areas of the city.

According to the United Nations, daily life in Goma began to return to a tentative normalcy on Saturday following intense hostilities that resulted in numerous human rights violations, including summary executions, bombings of displacement camps, and incidents of gang rape and other forms of sexual violence.
