Union Showdown: NASU And SSANU End Strike With Strings Attached

In a joint statement issued by NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi and SSANU National President Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, the unions indicated that the decision follows a period of industrial action that commenced on October 28, 2024.

The unions initiated the strike in response to what they termed the “government’s insensitivity” regarding their demands for the payment of withheld salaries.

In their statement, the unions underscored that the strike was essential to highlight their grievances and reiterated their commitment to advocating for fair treatment and timely salary payments for their members across institutions nationwide.

The statement read: “The national leadership of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of NASU and SSANU commends our members in the universities and inter-university centers for their unwavering determination and support during this strike.”

“You may recall that our ongoing strike action began on Monday, October 28, 2024, due to the government’s neglect of our members’ legitimate demands.”

“Throughout this industrial struggle, we engaged in several extensive discussions with federal government officials, including the new Minister of Education, the Minister of Finance, the outgoing Minister of State for Education, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, the Accountant-General of the Federation, and the leadership of the Department of State Services.”

“These high-level discussions led to an irrevocable commitment from the federal government to pay two of the four months of withheld salaries in staggered installments. One month is to be paid by the end of October 2024 (which has largely been completed), and the second month will be paid by the end of November 2024.”

“In light of this commitment and the level of engagement shown by the new minister and the Department of State Services leadership, the JAC has decided to suspend the ongoing indefinite strike for one month, effective Tuesday, November 5, 2024.”

“Branch leaders of both NASU and SSANU are instructed to hold a joint congress on their respective campuses on Monday, November 4, 2024, to inform members of this development and encourage them to return to work on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.”

“We also want to emphasize that discussions regarding the remaining two months of unpaid salaries, the ₦50 billion in earned allowances, arrears of 25/35 percent, and the wage award are ongoing.”

“Thank you for your understanding and support during this struggle. We appreciate your commitment and determination.”
