Breaking: Non-Teaching Staff Unions NASU, SSANU Launch Indefinite Strike Universities Brace For Impact

The decision stems from the non-payment of four months’ withheld salaries, despite previous resolutions with the government. A circular was issued to all branch chairmen of NASU and SSANU at universities and inter-university centers, explaining the move and its timing. Initially set for October 23, the strike was postponed to allow for better coordination following a meeting of NASU branches.

Signed by NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi and SSANU President Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, the notice points to what the unions consider a lack of commitment from the government to address their grievances. They highlighted an unfulfilled authorization by President Bola Tinubu, which directed the Minister of Finance to release 50 percent of the owed salaries.

According to the circular:

“JAC of NASU and SSANU has issued multiple notices to the government to redress this ugly situation, yet doubts remain over the government’s sincerity in addressing our cause. Given the ongoing NASU Trade Group Council Meeting, the effective strike date is now set for the midnight of October 27, 2024. This adjustment ensures all NASU branch officers are present to fully engage in the strike from its start.”

The JAC leaders expressed appreciation for the commitment of union members and emphasized their resolve to persist in this struggle until a satisfactory resolution is achieved.
