The incident, initially reported by PREMIUM TIMES, detailed a brutal ambush on Thursday that resulted in the tragic deaths of the Commanding Officer of 181 Army Amphibious Battalion, two majors, one captain, and 12 soldiers. Initially, the military reported 16 casualties, but later confirmed the deaths of 17 soldiers, including a lieutenant colonel, two majors, one captain, and 13 soldiers.

The military confirmed the soldiers’ deaths on Saturday, following which Okuama community witnessed an attack on Sunday morning, resulting in the burning of several houses. However, the military has categorically denied involvement in this retaliatory attack, stating that the community was already deserted before troops arrived.

Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, released a statement on Monday urging caution against spreading misinformation about reprisal attacks by soldiers. He emphasized the importance of identifying the perpetrators of the initial attack on the soldiers for accountability.

Mr. Buba further suggested that the burning of Okuama community might have been carried out by the rival Okoloba community. The ongoing dispute between these two communities underscores the potential for further unrest, implying that the military may not be directly responsible for subsequent actions.

Acknowledging the tragic loss of soldiers, Mr. Buba condemned the brutal manner in which they were killed. He assured the public of measured responses and consequences for the perpetrators while emphasizing the military’s commitment to upholding rules of engagement and respecting human rights.

As investigations continue into the Okuama community attack, the Nigerian military remains resolute in its duty to ensure the safety and security of citizens across the country.
