US Plans To Reclassify Marijuana As Less Dangerous Drug
The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is set to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous substance, according to reports. This move, which still requires review by the White House Office of Management and Budget, does not equate to full legalization of recreational marijuana use……READ ALSO Wife of Detained Binance Executive Accuses Nigerian Government Of Holding Husband With Boko Haram Members
Under the proposal, the White House Office of Management and Budget would acknowledge the medical benefits of cannabis and recognize that it poses less risk of abuse compared to some of the most dangerous drugs currently classified. The DEA plans to initiate a public comment period on the proposal to move marijuana from its current classification as a Schedule I drug, alongside heroin and LSD, to Schedule III, alongside substances like ketamine and certain anabolic steroids.
This recommendation follows input from the federal Health and Human Services Department and will undergo further review by an administrative judge after the public comment period. Once finalized, the reclassification would be published as a final rule.
Xochitl Hinojosa, the director of public affairs for the US Justice Department, confirmed the proposal, stating that it would kick off a formal rulemaking process as outlined in the Controlled Substances Act.
The move aligns with President Joe Biden’s call for a review of federal marijuana laws, initiated in October 2022. Biden has also pardoned thousands of individuals convicted federally for simple possession of marijuana and urged governors and local leaders to follow suit in expunging marijuana-related convictions.
In a statement last December, Biden emphasized the need to address the negative impact of marijuana convictions on individuals’ lives, highlighting the barriers to employment, housing, and education caused by such records. He emphasized the importance of rectifying these injustices and moving towards a more equitable approach to marijuana regulation.
