At 37, Usyk settled any debate regarding this generation’s top heavyweight when he defeated the previously unbeaten Tyson Fury for the second time late Saturday night in Riyadh.

When asked which heavyweight legends he felt he could not have defeated, Usyk humbly responded, “Oleksandr Usyk,” bowing in a karate gesture before departing.

There is no doubt that Usyk has earned his place among the likes of Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, and other undisputed heavyweight greats. The 2012 Olympic heavyweight gold medalist, now boasting an unblemished record of 23-0 as a professional and a unified champion in both cruiserweight and heavyweight divisions, has crafted one of boxing’s most impressive careers.

As noted by Ring Magazine, the intelligent, gap-toothed fighter from Simferopol, Crimea, has “completed boxing.”

Nevertheless, Usyk’s team believes he may still be overlooked, possibly due to his limited command of English or his less glamorous background. His manager, Egis Klimas, questioned, “What else does Oleksandr need to prove? He’s the best. Does he need to prove anything else?”

Late Saturday, Usyk showcased his speed, fitness, and precision, winning the rematch against the towering 6ft 9in (206cm), 281lb (127.4kg) Fury by unanimous decision. “The fight was easier than the first one,” Usyk remarked, noting he is rapidly running out of worthy challengers and even hinted at a potential return to cruiserweight.

Usyk has defeated Anthony Joshua twice and knocked out Daniel Dubois before facing Fury, who now seeks a rematch following Saturday’s bout.

These remarkable achievements stand in stark contrast to Usyk’s modest beginnings in boxing. At 15, already an adept street fighter, he transitioned to boxing, drawn by its affordability compared to football. “I decided to go into a boxing gym because you don’t need expensive equipment to be a boxer,” Usyk shared with Ring Magazine a decade ago. “I knew I could fight because I had won many street fights as a boy.”

Nicknamed “The Cat” for his quick reflexes, Usyk employs unique training methods, including four-minute breath-holding, juggling, and a party trick where he balances six coins on the back of his hands, flips them in the air, and catches them.

Now reaping the rewards in Saudi Arabia, Usyk is the heir to an elite lineage of Ukrainian fighters, which includes the Klitschko brothers and Vasyl Lomachenko. It is no surprise that he earned a reported $190 million for Saturday’s fight.
