WAEC Dismisses Viral Letter Claiming Police Deployment At Exam Centres
According to Ireporter Online, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed a letter circulating on social media alleging that security operatives would be deployed to examination centres for the ongoing 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
WAEC, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Moyosola Adesina, described the document as fake and the handiwork of individuals seeking to mislead the public and create unnecessary panic during the examination period.
The council clarified that the letter did not originate from the office of the Senior Deputy Registrar, Test Administration, or any department within WAEC Nigeria, stressing that no such directive had been issued regarding the deployment of security personnel to exam centres nationwide.
The forged document, dated May 27, 2026, was reportedly addressed to school proprietors and principals across the country, falsely claiming that arrangements had been concluded to deploy officers of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to all examination centres beginning June 1.
WAEC further noted that the fake correspondence carried a falsified signature in the name of the Senior Deputy Registrar and Head of Test Administration, S.D. Kum, in an attempt to give it credibility.
The examination body accused the perpetrators of attempting to deceive school authorities, parents, and candidates, while urging stakeholders to disregard the information in its entirety.
It advised the public to rely only on verified updates from its official communication channels, reaffirming that the document did not represent any directive from the council.
“The Management of the West African Examinations Council wishes to state categorically that the said letter is fake, as it did not emanate from the office of the Senior Deputy Registrar (Test Administration) or any other department within WAEC Nigeria,” the statement read.
