Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Nigerian Association of Nephrology (NAN) at the Presidential Villa ahead of their 37th Scientific Conference, Shettima emphasized that Nigeria’s medical expertise and cost-effective care have attracted international patients. He noted that thirteen U.S. citizens recently underwent kidney transplants in Nigeria, receiving care comparable to global standards.

However, Shettima acknowledged the financial strain faced by many patients post-surgery, with high costs for essential immunosuppressants and other aftercare. He stressed the need for continued investment in specialized medical education to maintain and improve the country’s healthcare system.

Highlighting his contributions to healthcare in Borno State, Shettima recalled initiatives like free maternal care and the sponsorship of 60 female students to study medicine in Sudan, with most now serving in Nigerian medical institutions.

He concluded by urging deliberate investment in specialized healthcare education to sustain this positive trend and further strengthen Nigeria’s medical sector.
