Wike Delivers: New Minimum Wage And Arrears Approved For FCT Staff

wage for FCT administration staff.
This was revealed in a statement signed by Anthony Odeh, Press Secretary to the Head of Civil Service of the FCT, and distributed to journalists on Tuesday.
In May 2024, President Bola Tinubu signed the ₦70,000 minimum wage bill into law following extensive negotiations with organized labour. However, criticism has mounted over delays in implementation across several states, including the FCT.
Labour unions such as the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) FCT chapters recently issued an ultimatum, threatening a shutdown of activities on November 30, 2024, in line with nationwide strike directives over the delayed wage rollout.
The unions also accused Wike’s administration of failing to engage with labour leaders since he assumed office in August 2023.
In response, Wike approved the new minimum wage on Monday, November 18, 2024, as part of efforts to improve staff welfare and address longstanding grievances.
“In a bid to address the concerns of workers under the Federal Capital Territory Administration, the minister has approved the payment of the minimum wage,” the statement read.
The Acting Head of Civil Service of the FCT, Mrs. Grace Adayilo, added that Wike also sanctioned the payment of three months’ arrears, beginning November 2024.
This development aims to quell growing discontent among FCT workers and ensure compliance with the federal wage law.
