Yemi Alade Slams Lagos Govt Over House Demolitions, Cites Real Estate Devaluation
Nigerian music sensation, Yemi Alade, has criticized the Lagos State Government for the recent demolition of residential properties in the Maryland and Mende areas of the state. Alade expressed concern that the government’s actions are not only rendering people homeless overnight but also depreciating the real estate value of the state. She argued that such measures are driving away potential investors and eroding trust in Nigeria’s property sector.
“Lagos State, what’s going on? Does it make sense that people will invest millions of naira and dollars into real estate; buy houses and lands and the state government will demolish the place and render people homeless overnight?” Alade questioned in her post.
Highlighting the ongoing situation in the Maryland and Mende areas, she lamented the plight of individuals waking up to find themselves without homes due to the demolitions.
In response to Alade’s criticism, the Lagos State Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, clarified that the demolished houses were constructed on drainage channels. He explained that despite warnings and notices, the property owners had encroached on designated setback areas, impeding rainwater flow.
Wahab further revealed that Governor Jide Sanwo-Olu had granted certain concessions regarding the setback requirements to accommodate the affected property owners. However, due to persistent violations, the enforcement team had been instructed to proceed with the removal of structures built on drainage alignments.
The Commissioner’s statement aimed to provide context to the ongoing demolitions and address concerns raised by Alade and others regarding the government’s actions.
