The airstrike hit villages near the Surame desert, a known hideout for the Lakurawa terror group, resulting in significant casualties.

In a post on X, Atiku described the attack as “an outrage that must be condemned in the strongest terms.” He raised concerns about the failure to learn from past tragedies, citing a previous airstrike on December 3, 2023, that targeted a religious gathering in Tudun Biri, Kaduna, resulting in numerous civilian deaths.

Atiku emphasized the need to end the “tragic cycle of death,” urging the government to heed past lessons to prevent further loss of innocent life.

He stated, “The devastating airstrike that resulted in the deaths of nearly a dozen innocent civilians and left many others injured in the peaceful communities of Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa in Sokoto State is an outrage that must be condemned in the strongest terms.

“But this tragedy raises an important question: What have we really learned from the heartbreaking losses of the past? On December 3, 2023, many innocent lives were lost in a brutal airstrike on a religious gathering at Tudun Biri, near Kaduna. How many more lives must be taken before we take decisive action?

“While targeting terrorists is a legitimate goal, these strikes must be conducted with utmost precision and based on clear, reliable intelligence. The indiscriminate killing of innocent citizens—our brothers, sisters, and neighbors—can never be justified. This represents not just a failure but a gross violation of humanity itself.

“When those we seek to protect are instead treated as targets, it breeds division and resentment. We cannot expect them to distinguish between those who defend them and those who inflict harm when they find themselves caught in the crossfire.

“We must put an end to this tragic cycle of violence. The pathway forward lies in learning from the past, valuing each life, and ensuring that no more families suffer the loss of loved ones to senseless violence.

“To the grieving families and residents of Sokoto, my heartfelt condolences go out to you. May the souls of the departed rest in peace. Amin.” -AA
