2027 Election Showdown: PDP’s Future Hinges On Southern Presidential Candidate, Says Pearse
In a bold call for unity and strategic leadership, Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, a prominent Lagos chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has urged the party to nominate a southern candidate for the 2027 presidential race, asserting…2027 Election Showdown: PDP’s Future Hinges On Southern Presidential Candidate, Says Pearse
that a northern candidate would undermine the party’s chances of victory.
Pearse, who played a key role in the Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign, emphasized that the general sentiment across the nation is in favor of a southern president to complete the eight-year southern presidency cycle, critical for the party’s success in the next election.
In an exclusive interview with NAN, Pearse stated, “The national mood is clear: PDP must field a southerner for president in 2027. We need this to stabilize Nigeria and restore confidence in governance.”
He dismissed the idea of a merger with other political parties, such as the Labour Party (LP) and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), arguing that past mergers have been unsuccessful in the country. “An alliance between opposition parties is unrealistic,” Pearse remarked, noting that both LP and NNPP have minimal political influence, each securing only one governor in the 2023 elections.
On the path to victory, Pearse believes that PDP, with its strong base of 12 governors and significant representation in the National Assembly, is poised for a 2027 win, provided it strengthens its internal unity. He added, “If even 60% of former members return, PDP will emerge victorious. The 2023 election was close, and we are more than capable of securing the presidency in 2027.”
Reflecting on the party’s 2023 loss, Pearse pointed to internal divisions over zoning, which led to confusion and discord. He stressed that PDP must avoid repeating these mistakes. “We must unify the party and ensure clarity on zoning agreements, especially concerning the national chairmanship and presidential candidate positions.”
Pearse’s call for a southern candidate and internal cohesion is seen as a pivotal moment for the PDP as it charts its path toward reclaiming power in 2027.
