The conflict erupted last Friday at the bustling North Bank Market, near the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering (NASME), sparked by a minor altercation between members of the rival Red and Black cult groups. What began as a seemingly innocuous dispute quickly escalated into a full-blown confrontation, transforming the market into a battleground of terror and bloodshed.
Eyewitnesses recount scenes of horror as traders shuttered their businesses and fled for safety, while rival gang members engaged in a relentless pursuit, hunting down their adversaries with deadly intent. The violence persisted unabated until Saturday, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake and shattering the peace of the community.
Cibilus Odinaka, Chairman of the North Bank Market, expressed dismay over the sluggish response of security personnel to the crisis, lamenting the loss of six lives and the closure of the market since Friday. Urgent calls for enhanced security measures echoed through the streets as residents grappled with the aftermath of the brutal clash.
Nura Umar, leader of Operation Shere, an anti-cult organization, provided chilling details of the carnage, revealing the grim fate of victims who fell prey to the vicious onslaught. Among the casualties, one victim suffered the gruesome fate of decapitation, with several others bearing the scars of severed limbs and relentless brutality.
Confirming the tragic development, Police Public Relations Officer Catherine Anene acknowledged the prevalence of cult activities in the area and assured the public of ongoing investigations to bring perpetrators to justice.
As the community reels from the shock of this senseless violence, questions loom over the efficacy of security measures and the urgent need for proactive intervention to prevent further bloodshed. The harrowing toll of seven lives lost serves as a stark reminder of the grave consequences of unchecked criminality and underscores the imperative of collective action to restore peace and safety to the embattled region.
