BREAKING: Rivers Crisis Deepens As Fubara Receives ‘Strong’ Letter

Prof Zacchaeus Adangor
Professor Zacchaeus Adangor has tendered his resignation as the Attorney-General (AG) and Commissioner for Justice in Rivers State.
Dated December 14, 2023, Adangor’s resignation was addressed to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, citing “purely personal decision” as the basis for his departure.
Adangor previously served as the Attorney General during the administration of Nyesom Wike, who held the position of governor from May 2015 to May 2023. His resignation coincides with the ongoing political crisis in the state, particularly within the 32-member Rivers State House of Assembly.

The discord in the assembly originated from a rift between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party in the APC-controlled government.
The Assembly Complex was recently demolished by the governor, citing structural concerns, amid heightened security, two months after a fire incident.

Governor Fubara presented the N800 billion 2024 budget estimates to the Edison Ehie-led group at the Government House, with Ehie being recognized by the court while Martins Amaewhule was restrained from using the Assembly complex. Ehie also declared vacant the seats of 27 members who defected from the PDP to the APC, a move linked to their loyalty to Amaewhule, a Wike ally.
The Assembly’s leadership crisis began in October, marked by an impeachment notice served on Governor Fubara and the removal of Ehie as the House leader by Amaewhule.
In response, Fubara loyalists immediately impeached Amaewhule and appointed Ehie as the new Speaker. Despite interventions by President Bola Tinubu and PDP governors, the political upheaval in the oil-rich South-South state appears unresolved.
