The assault, which took place on October 27 at a Chadian military post in Barkaram, prompted President Deby to oversee operations along the Lake Chad border.
Hassan Abdelkerim BouyĆ«bri, Chad’s Director General of Communication, issued a statement indicating the Presidentās concern over the coalition’s diminishing unity, saying, āThe MNJTFās lack of coordinated action against Boko Haram suggests a weakening commitment to this collective fight.ā
Since October 28, President Deby has been at the frontline, overseeing the burial of fallen soldiers, ensuring medical treatment for the wounded, and establishing a command post for counter-insurgency measures. He also launched Operation Haskanite to eradicate Boko Haram elements, reinforced Chadās borders, and outlined new strategies to tackle the militantsā asymmetric tactics.
President Deby emphasized his commitment to Chad’s security but suggested Chad might reconsider its role in the MNJTF unless the task force shows greater unity.
Established in 1994, the MNJTF, which includes troops from Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Nigeria, was initially formed to combat cross-border crime but expanded in 2012 to focus on terrorism in the Lake Chad Basin region.
