Former Rep Urges FG To Secure Release Of Detained Nigerians In Cameroon
Abdul Oroh, a former member of the House of Representatives and civic rights lawyer, has called upon the Federal Government to pursue diplomatic channels to secure the release of Nigerian citizens detained by Cameroonian authorities……READ ALSO House Of Representatives Summons KFC Over Alleged Discrimination Against Former Governor’s Son Disability
Speaking at a news conference in Abuja after submitting a petition to the National Assembly on behalf of the detained individuals, Oroh highlighted the circumstances surrounding their arrest. The detainees were apprehended at Nera Hotel in Abuja on January 5, 2018, by security operatives and subsequently deported to Cameroon.
Oroh revealed that the detainees faced trial before a military tribunal and were convicted of terrorism and secession-related charges, receiving life sentences. He emphasized the need for parliamentary intervention to facilitate their release, suggesting that dialogue and negotiation could lead to a peaceful resolution.
Among the detainees is a 65-year-old former deputy registrar of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), whose sentencing to life imprisonment Oroh deemed unjust under Cameroonian law. Additionally, Oroh highlighted the exorbitant fine imposed on the individual, amounting to $533 million, a sum unfeasible for either the Cameroonian state or the individual to pay.
Oroh’s appeal underscores the urgency of the situation and the importance of diplomatic efforts to ensure the safe return of the detained Nigerians and restore peace to their communities.
