IG Orders Probe Into Viral Video of Retired Officer’s N2m Pension Claim

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a full-scale investigation into a viral video in which a retired Superintendent of Police expressed dissatisfaction with his retirement benefits.

The retired officer, who served the Nigeria Police Force for 35 years before retiring on October 1, 2023, reportedly rejected a retirement package of ₦2 million. In the video, he lamented the sum as inadequate and said the Nigeria Police Pension Board informed him that his approved retirement benefits totaled ₦3 million — ₦1 million in arrears and ₦2 million as final entitlement.

In response, the IGP directed the Nigeria Police Force Pensions Limited to urgently review the claims, identify any lapses, and take appropriate corrective action.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP emphasized that the welfare of both serving and retired police officers remains a top priority for the leadership of the force.

While acknowledging past efforts to improve the pension system, Egbetokun stressed that constructive feedback like the one in the viral video is crucial for identifying deficiencies and driving reforms.

“The IGP has ordered a thorough investigation into the allegations raised in a viral video by a retired Superintendent of Police concerning the welfare and retirement benefits of police pensioners,” the statement read.

The police chief reassured both active and retired officers, as well as their families, of the Force’s unwavering commitment to ensuring a welfare system that respects their years of dedicated service.

He called on stakeholders to remain calm and patient while the NPF Pensions conducts its investigation and works with relevant agencies to ensure sustainable improvements.
