In a statement on X following a meeting with Tinubu at the G20 Summit in Brazil, Georgieva commended the president for his decisive actions to accelerate economic growth and generate jobs for Nigeria’s rapidly growing population.

“Excellent meeting with President @officialABAT at the #G20 Summit. Commended Nigeria’s decisive actions to reform the economy, accelerate growth, and generate jobs for its vibrant population. The IMF strongly supports Nigeria on this journey,” Georgieva said.

Under Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria has implemented significant reforms, such as removing the petrol subsidy, liberalizing the foreign exchange market, and deregulating the petroleum downstream sector. These measures are designed to stabilize the economy, boost investor confidence, and attract investments.

The IMF reaffirmed its support for these reforms on October 25, 2024, recognizing their potential to reshape Nigeria’s economic future. Additionally, during Nigeria’s 25th Democracy Anniversary on June 12, Tinubu acknowledged the country’s unstable economy and the need for urgent reforms.

Despite the global recognition, many Nigerians continue to face economic challenges, highlighting the importance of careful execution and sustained commitment to these reforms. The World Bank also noted positive impacts from the reforms but emphasized the need for continued action to avoid potential setbacks.
