Interior Minister Urges New Officers To Uphold Discipline In Service
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has charged newly inducted officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to maintain the highest standards of discipline, integrity, and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
The minister gave the directive on Friday during the passing-out parade of 428 cadets from the 32nd Assistant Superintendent of Corrections (ASC) Basic Course International, held in Kaduna.
Represented by Abdulmalik Jibrin, Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board, Tunji-Ojo said the cadets had undergone one month of rigorous training, focusing on custodial and non-custodial operations in accordance with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019.
He commended their performance, noting that the officers are now well-equipped in correctional operations, institutional management, and effective communication.
The minister emphasized that the training supports President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes prison reforms, inmate rehabilitation, and societal reintegration of ex-convicts.
He also praised Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, and the training college for their dedication to raising professional standards in the service.
Reiterating the government’s commitment, Tunji-Ojo assured the new officers of improved welfare and timely, merit-based promotions.
He advised the cadets to approach their careers with patriotism and resilience, stating, “The journey ahead will be demanding, but you are well prepared.”
At the event, outstanding cadets were presented with awards in various categories including academics, leadership, marksmanship, drills, and conduct, in recognition of their exceptional performance during training.
The minister’s remarks mark a renewed emphasis on ethical corrections service and sustainable reforms within Nigeria’s penal system.
