Kano Government Allocated N1.2 Billion Monthly For Water Supply

Ali Makoda, the Commissioner for Water Resources in Kano State, revealed that the state government dedicates approximately N1.2 billion each month to provide clean drinking water to residents of the metropolis. The commissioner attributed the water scarcity in the state capital and its surroundings to outdated equipment, particularly at the Tamburawa Water Treatment Plant, which serves a significant portion of Kano metropolis. He also cited the impact of high temperatures, as people consume more water to cope with the weather.

Makoda criticized the previous administration for neglecting the water sector, asserting that only 20 percent of the state’s water demand was met during their tenure. In contrast, he claimed that the current administration, under Governor Abba Yusuf, has increased water supply to meet over 60 percent of the population’s needs.

To address the water supply challenges, Makoda revealed that the state government has partnered with the French government to invest 63.4 million Euros in constructing the third Kano Water Treatment Plant. He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring an adequate supply of drinking water for the people of Kano, despite the substantial financial investments required.
