The accident occurred shortly after takeoff from Chesegon, where General Ogolla and his team had visited a school. President Ruto expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating that the nation had lost ten gallant officers while two individuals survived the crash.

In response, President Ruto convened an urgent meeting of the National Security Council and declared three days of national mourning, starting Friday, with flags to be flown at half-mast. The Kenya Air Force has dispatched an air investigation team to determine the cause of the crash.

General Ogolla, a distinguished military leader, had a long and decorated career. Appointed Chief of the Defence Forces in April last year, he was a trained fighter pilot who joined the Kenya Defence Forces in 1984. He commanded the Kenyan Air Force from 2018 to 2021.

The helicopter, a Huey model, was carrying more than ten senior commanders, including General Ogolla, on a security mission in the North Rift area as part of Operation Maliza Uhalifu, aimed at addressing insecurity challenges prevalent in the Rift Valley region.

President Ruto praised General Ogolla’s service and commitment to the nation, highlighting his critical role in national security. Despite controversies surrounding his appointment, President Ruto emphasized Ogolla’s exemplary military credentials and leadership qualities.

As investigations into the crash continue, Kenya mourns the loss of one of its most valiant generals and other military personnel, reflecting on their dedicated service to the nation.
