The individuals, Sokari Goodboy, a lawmaker representing Aboada West Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, and Ezebunwo Ichemati, a PDP chieftain, were apprehended by the police just outside the meeting venue on Thursday.

Details surrounding the arrests emerged from a viral video, where a woman purportedly from Governor Fubara’s media team revealed that the arrests were made on the orders of a local government chairman from Rivers State. While the exact reasons for the arrests remain unclear, the timing and location suggest a possible political motive linked to ongoing internal party dynamics.

According to the woman in the video, the arrests were carried out arbitrarily, with the local government chairman allegedly instructing the security operatives to detain the governor’s loyalists. The Governor’s Special Assistant on Electronic Media, Jerry Omotsegunwa, confirmed the incident and called for the immediate release of the detainees, emphasizing that they were present at the meeting in solidarity and should not have been arrested.

The political landscape in Rivers State has been marked by tensions and factionalism, with differing allegiances among lawmakers. Of the 31 lawmakers in the State House of Assembly, 27 are reportedly loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, while the remaining four are aligned with Governor Fubara. This incident adds another layer of complexity to the political dynamics in the state, raising concerns about the use of state apparatus for political ends.
