IGP Egbetokun Withdraws Yahaya Bello’s Police Escort Amid EFCC Allegations
In a significant move amidst mounting allegations of financial impropriety, Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has issued an order to withdraw all police officers assigned to the former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello……READ ALSO Akpabio Urges IGP Egbetokun To Combat Corruption In Police Force
The directive, communicated via a police wireless message with reference number CB:4001/DOPS/PMF/FHQ/ABJ/VOL.48/34, underscores the seriousness of the situation. It stated, “IG has ordered the withdrawal of all policemen attached to His Excellency and former Executive Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello. Acknowledge compliance and treat with utmost importance.”
This development follows closely on the heels of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) placing Bello on a watchlist to prevent his potential departure from the country. The EFCC’s directive, circulated to all security agencies, highlights concerns over alleged financial misconduct amounting to N80.2 billion.
In response to the EFCC’s call, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) issued an internal circular instructing its area and zonal commands to apprehend Bello if encountered. The circular, copied to high-level security authorities including the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Inspector General of Police, underscores the gravity of the situation.
The EFCC’s declaration of Bello as wanted for financial crimes intensifies the scrutiny surrounding the former governor’s activities. The commission has urged anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward promptly, signaling a concerted effort to ensure accountability and justice.
As investigations proceed and tensions escalate, the withdrawal of police protection adds another layer of complexity to Yahaya Bello’s predicament, marking a significant chapter in his legal and political journey.
