Lagos Faces Flash Flood Threat Govt Sounds Alarm As Rivers Overflow After Heavy Rainfall

The State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, explained that the combined effects of the intense rainfall and the release of water from the Oyan Dam have caused drainage channels to struggle with discharging water into the rivers.

Wahab noted that the rising water levels in the major rivers, due to the rainfall between Wednesday and Thursday, have slowed the discharge process, with the situation only gradually improving. He added that data from the state’s weather monitoring stations revealed that Thursday’s rainfall values were the highest recorded this year. The water level at several locations, including Kara, Isheri-North GRA, Majidun, and Falomo, has significantly risen, with some already exceeding flood thresholds.

Wahab emphasized the need for continued vigilance as water releases from the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority, combined with further rainfall, are expected to cause flooding in various areas across the state. He warned that October’s water level readings have been consistently higher than in previous months and years.
