Minister Holds Talks With SSANU, NASU, NAAT Leaders Amid Strike
In an effort to address the ongoing warning strike embarked upon by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, convened a meeting with the union leaders on Wednesday in Abuja……READ ALSO STRIKE: SSANU, NASU, NAATS Protest, Block UNILAG Gate
The minister, speaking to journalists after the meeting, assured that the Federal Government remains committed to dialogue with the unions to prevent further escalation of the strike.
The strike, which commenced nationwide on Monday, was initiated to protest the Federal Government’s withholding of four-month salaries from 2021, a consequence of the unions’ previous strike action.
Mamman emphasized the government’s desire to maintain stability in tertiary institutions, expressing optimism that the ongoing discussions would yield positive outcomes.
While the General Secretary of NASU, Prince Peters Adeyemi, acknowledged the government’s openness in addressing their concerns, he maintained that the strike would persist until tangible progress is made.
Similarly, the President of NAAT, Comrade Ibeji Nwokoma, echoed Adeyemi’s sentiments, stating that consultations with their constituents would continue before any decisions are reached.
As discussions between the government and the unions continue, stakeholders eagerly await resolutions that would pave the way for the resolution of the strike and the restoration of normalcy in higher education institutions.
