Mysterious Deadly Disease Kills Dozens In DR Congo, Country On High Alert
The Democratic Republic of Congo has declared a state of “maximum alert” following the outbreak of a mysterious disease that has led to numerous fatalities within just over a month. Health officials have described the illness, which exhibits flu-like symptoms such...READ MORE...
as fever, cough, and headaches, as an “unknown public health event.”
The disease was first identified in late October and has so far been confined to the Panzi region, located approximately 700 kilometers southeast of Kinshasa. Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba confirmed that 27 deaths have been recorded in health centers, with an additional 44 deaths reported from the community, though the exact causes of these may vary.
“The situation is alarming, and we are treating it as an epidemic that requires immediate monitoring,” Kamba said during a press briefing in Kinshasa.
The region faces significant challenges, including difficult access by road, a shortage of drinking water and medical supplies, and a high rate of malnutrition, especially among children. Over 60% of the population in the area is affected by malnutrition, one of the highest rates in the country.
Initial data suggests that the disease is particularly severe among young children, with nearly 40% of cases reported in children under five years old. Epidemiologists have been dispatched to the region to collect samples and investigate further.
Experts have ruled out the possibility of a coronavirus outbreak, but they have confirmed that the disease impacts the respiratory system. At present, authorities are uncertain whether it is viral or bacterial in nature, and the mode of transmission remains unknown.
This latest health crisis adds to the ongoing challenges faced by the DRC, which has been grappling with an outbreak of mpox in recent months, contributing to over 1,000 deaths.
As the investigation into this deadly disease continues, the government and health organizations remain on high alert, focusing on containing the spread and addressing the region’s ongoing health and infrastructure challenges.
