Basketmouth Criticizes Nollywood Producers For Mismanaging Streaming Funds, Impacting Movie Quality
Nigerian comedian and filmmaker Basketmouth has called out Nollywood producers for allegedly mismanaging funds from global streaming platforms, leading to subpar production quality in Nigerian films. In a candid interview with ireporteronline, Basketmouth accused producers of diverting substantial portions...READ MORE…
of production budgets for personal gain, leaving only a fraction for the actual filmmaking process.
He claimed that many producers receive substantial sums, such as $1.5 million from streaming platforms, but only allocate about 10% of that for the actual film production. According to Basketmouth, this mismanagement has had a direct impact on the quality of Nollywood movies, with some epic films appearing more like stage plays.
Basketmouth also revealed that when streaming platforms stepped in to pay actors directly in an effort to ensure transparency, some producers reportedly pressured actors into returning part of their pay. This practice, he said, continues to undermine the potential of Nollywood productions.
He emphasized that the lack of proper investment in films, coupled with producers’ focus on personal gain, is evident in the final product. “When you mismanage funds, your movie cannot be at its best. These producers end up buying houses and cars while the films suffer,” Basketmouth lamented.
His remarks highlight ongoing concerns about the financial mismanagement affecting the Nigerian film industry.
