NDPC To Intensify Scrutiny Of NIMC Licensees Following Unauthorized NIN Verification Incident
The Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has announced increased scrutiny of licensees of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) following an incident of unauthorized National Identification Number (NIN) verification by expressverify.com…..READ ALSO Data Compliance Alert: NDPC Mandates Registration For Controllers, Processors
According to the NDPC, their investigation into the incident revealed that a third-party, originally authorized to provide verification services, may have allowed expressverify.com access to its NIN verification credentials. The circumstances surrounding this permission are currently under investigation.
As a remedial measure, NIMC has suspended all access to its database, affecting all verification requests, including those deemed crucial. However, limited access has been granted to select establishments providing essential public services such as education and security.
The ongoing investigation aims to determine how expressverify.com obtained the credentials of legitimate third parties and ascertain the liability of those involved, in accordance with existing laws.
Moving forward, NDPC will subject data processing by NIMC licensees to rigorous scrutiny, permitting only those demonstrating credible evidence of regulatory compliance to conduct NIN verification.
Furthermore, NDPC plans to conduct intensive training sessions to ensure personnel and licensees understand their responsibilities under the Nigeria Data Protection Act, NIMC’s Privacy Policy, and other relevant regulatory protocols.
The NDPC emphasized the importance of the NIN as essential data for sustainable development and urged the public to recognize its significance in national identity management.
