OYC President: Igbo Youths Will Take Charge Of Leadership In The Region
The National President of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council (OYC), Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, has declared that young people will soon assume leadership roles across Igboland, stressing that the current set of leaders have failed to meet the aspirations of the people.
Igboayaka made this known in Umuahia on Saturday during the inauguration of the new executives of the Abia State chapter of the OYC. He expressed concern over the dilapidated state of public infrastructure in the region, such as schools, healthcare facilities and other essential services, blaming past leaders for neglecting public assets while concentrating on building private ventures.
Charging the newly inaugurated Abia OYC chairman, Eugene Okonta, and his team, Igboayaka urged them to ensure that individuals with questionable integrity are not allowed to occupy leadership positions in Igboland.
He also stressed the need for unity among Igbo youths, revealing that the organisation is driving a paradigm shift that would see leadership responsibilities transferred to the younger generation across the region.
In his remarks, the new Abia State OYC chairman, Eugene Okonta, pledged to work towards the realisation of the collective dreams of Igbo youths and the entire Igbo nation. He assured that under his watch, the OYC in Abia would take its rightful place.
Okonta further disclosed that his leadership would collaborate with government agencies, security outfits, private organisations, religious youth bodies, and other stakeholders to curb crime and other social vices among young people in Alaigbo.
He called on lawmakers at both state and federal levels from Igboland to introduce legislation aimed at tackling youth unemployment in the region.
Okonta also appealed to young people to shun crime and drug abuse, warning that no amount of economic hardship should push them into kidnapping, cybercrime or other criminal activities.
