Scare Over Uncollected PVCs: INEC Debunks Destruction Claims

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refuted claims that it plans to destroy uncollected Permanent

Voter Cards (PVCs).

In a statement issued on Sunday, INEC called the reports “false” and urged the public to disregard them.

“We have been made aware of a media report suggesting that the Commission is considering the destruction of over six million uncollected PVCs dating back to the 2015 voter registration. This information is inaccurate. At no point has the Commission contemplated destroying uncollected PVCs,” the statement clarified.

In December 2024, INEC proposed the use of computer-generated slips for voter accreditation during elections. INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, noted that the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) necessitated a review of the PVC as the primary method of voter identification on election day. He added that the Commission would soon present its recommendations for electoral reform to the National Assembly.

Just days before the 2023 presidential election, INEC revealed that 87,209,007 PVCs had been collected, accounting for 93.3 percent of the 93,469,008 registered voters. However, 6,259,229 PVCs, or 6.7 percent, remained uncollected.
