Six members of the House of Representatives from Rivers State have formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking another major political realignment in the state. According to Ireporter Online, the lawmakers announced their decision on Tuesday during plenary at the National Assembly.

The legislators cited persistent leadership crises and internal instability within the PDP as the primary reasons for their exit, noting that the situation had hampered their ability to effectively serve their constituents. They maintained that the challenges within the party made it increasingly difficult to pursue meaningful legislative engagement and constituency representation.

Their individual letters of defection were read on the floor of the House by the Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, who confirmed that the lawmakers had undertaken extensive consultations with stakeholders, political leaders, and constituents before reaching their decision.

Political observers note that the defecting lawmakers are widely regarded as loyalists of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, a key political figure in Rivers State.

Those who crossed over to the APC are Hon. Solomon Bob, Hon. Victor Obuzor, Hon. Dumnamene Dekor, Hon. Cyril Hart, Hon. Blessing Amadi, and Hon. Felix Nwaeke.

The development comes just days after the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, also announced his defection from the PDP to the APC. Fubara made the declaration during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

Reports indicate that the governor’s move followed a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Explaining his decision, Fubara stated that full political alignment was necessary to effectively support the President, adding that his administration could no longer offer only indirect backing.

The latest defections further underscore the deepening political shifts in Rivers State and signal a significant boost for the APC ahead of future political contests.
