For Tayo, securing a fake marriage certificate was his only option to live and work legally in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. After completing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Nigeria, Tayo set his sights on greener pastures abroad. Once in the UK, he was advised that obtaining a marriage certificate would help him secure a green card. As expected, the certificate allowed him to live and work comfortably, but eight years later, his fraudulent marriage was exposed. Tayo’s situation mirrors that of many others who resort to this illegal route in their quest for a better life.

Recently, four Nigerians were convicted in the UK for being part of a network that issued over 2,000 fake marriage certificates to help fellow citizens gain legal status under the EU Settlement Scheme. The group received a combined sentence of 13 years in prison for their role in the scheme.

Experts are alarmed at this rise in fake marriage certificates, particularly for those aiming to gain permanent residence or work opportunities abroad. Marriage counselors, such as Mrs. Shukurat Badmus, condemn the act as immoral and fraudulent. Some, like Joe Bollore, see these certificates as a “necessary evil” in situations where actual weddings aren’t feasible due to circumstances like distance.

To many, including Miss Oyenike Bello, this trend undermines the sanctity of marriage. As Jide Oluboye, a Lagos resident, points out, these certificates provide a convenient shortcut for those avoiding the expense and hassle of an actual wedding, only to secure immigration documents.

Meanwhile, in a viral video, Dr. Shola, a content creator, explains that for many Nigerians aiming to live and work legally in the US or UK, securing a green card through marriage is seen as the only viable option. He emphasizes that visa acquisition is not enough; securing permanent status requires a green card, which is often obtained through a marriage that’s sometimes based on convenience rather than love.

In the UAE, Nigerian men are facing work permit challenges and have turned to fake marriages as a workaround. This has sparked a conversation about the systemic issues and immigration struggles faced by Nigerians overseas.

Human rights activist Dr. Efe Anaughe warns of the legal consequences, including imprisonment and deportation, for individuals caught using fraudulent marriage certificates. He urges the Nigerian government to strengthen enforcement and raise awareness about the dangers of this practice.
