According to reports, Saleem had persistently pressured Hauwa, a student of the College of Nursing Sciences in Maiduguri, to accept his advances, but she consistently declined. Spurned by her rejection, Saleem allegedly attacked her with a club until she lost consciousness.

Security analyst and counter-intelligence expert, Zagazola Makama, disclosed the incident, revealing that Saleem was subsequently arrested by the police. However, he was later released on the order of the Borno State Secretary to the Government, Hon. Bukar Tijjani.

Hauwa’s refusal to reciprocate Saleem’s affections reportedly led to increasingly threatening behavior from him. Despite her repeated assertions that she had no feelings for him, Saleem allegedly persisted, warning her of dire consequences if she did not comply.

The situation escalated on a fateful Monday evening when Saleem allegedly physically assaulted Hauwa with a club, causing her to lose consciousness and suffer severe injuries. Instead of rendering aid, Saleem reportedly fled the scene, leaving Hauwa at the mercy of her relatives, who intervened to save her life.

Although Saleem was initially arrested by the police, he was released three days later, prompting Hauwa’s relatives to lodge a formal complaint with the Borno State Police Command Headquarters. Subsequently, Saleem was rearrested and detained for a week before being released again, allegedly due to political intervention.

In response to the incident, Jummai Mshelia, the Borno Coordinator of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), condemned the attack and called for Saleem to be charged and prosecuted. She emphasized the importance of addressing such cases promptly and ensuring that justice is served to deter future perpetrators.

Mshelia also urged the public to report incidents of abuse to the appropriate authorities, highlighting the societal impact of such crimes and the need for collective action to combat them.
