in Enugu State, has stirred debate, with many questioning its validity. Mbata, a former lawmaker from Rivers State, emerged as the 13th President-General of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, succeeding Fidelis Chukwu.

In his acceptance speech, Mbata thanked regional governors for their support but faced criticism from Okwukwu, who emphasized the need for adherence to Ohanaeze’s traditional election processes.
Okwukwu criticized the venue choice, alleging political interference, and noted that past elections were conducted in the state producing the President-General, highlighting discrepancies in the current process.

This controversy follows Mbata’s overwhelming victory via a voice vote, attended by representatives from various sectors of Igbo society. However, Okwukwu argued that true legitimacy is rooted in broader community involvement and adherence to established norms.
