Mbah’s Development Drive: A New Dawn For Enugu’s Growth
Effective governance has been a rarity in Nigeria’s political landscape due to flawed selection processes. Often, leadership choices are driven by financial resources, narrow group interests, or affiliations with influential figures, rather..Mbah’s Development Drive: A New Dawn For Enugu’s Growth
than merit.
Yet, as Proverbs 29:2 reminds us, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people mourn.” This sentiment seems to resonate with the current administration of Enugu State under the leadership of Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.
Political analysts have noted that Governor Mbah is swiftly pushing for development and transformation in the state, given the pressing needs across various sectors. In just 18 months in office, Governor Mbah has made substantial strides, becoming a symbol of good governance in Nigeria.
On January 5, 2025, he invited President Bola Tinubu from Lagos to Enugu for the commissioning of legacy projects executed by his administration. The visit was eagerly anticipated by the president, who proudly declared at a New Year luncheon that his first official function in 2025 would take place in Enugu, and he looked forward to donning the Isiagu attire and red cap.
Recognizing the profligacy often associated with political officeholders, President Tinubu expressed his excitement upon landing at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu. His enthusiasm was fueled by the impressive volume and quality of projects completed by Mbah within such a short period.
Among the projects commissioned were 30 fully equipped Smart Green Schools out of 260 currently under construction across all 260 wards in the state, a multi-purpose Enugu International Conference Centre, 90 urban roads in Enugu City, and a state-of-the-art Command and Control Centre with 150 patrol vehicles equipped with AI-enhanced surveillance cameras.
The most notable development was the Command Centre, described by a security expert as the most advanced in Nigeria. This facility, along with the AI-powered surveillance cameras mounted on patrol vehicles, ensures comprehensive statewide security, fostering an environment conducive to private sector investment.
President Tinubu could hardly contain his admiration while commissioning these initiatives. He praised Mbah for his dedication to securing lives and attracting both foreign and local investors, emphasizing that strong security is the foundation of development.
At a meeting with South East stakeholders, President Tinubu reiterated his stance that the focus on good governance transcends party affiliations. He applauded Governor Mbah for his commitment to technological advancement and private sector collaboration, stating, “Any performing governor is my friend, regardless of party.”
Governor Mbah, known for his simple lifestyle since assuming office, emphasized that all projects commissioned were part of his vision to elevate Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion within four years, positioning the state as the premier destination for investment, business, tourism, and quality living.
Acknowledging that insecurity hinders development, Mbah highlighted the significant investments made in security, facilitated by the removal of fuel subsidies. His AI-enhanced security initiative, operational through a statewide CCTV network, underscores his commitment to maintaining safety and fostering economic growth.
The governor also pointed out that his administration’s focus extends beyond infrastructure, with substantial investments in primary healthcare, having established 260 Primary Healthcare Centres to provide 24/7 services, even in remote areas.
With these developments, it is evident that President Tinubu was impressed by Governor Mbah’s achievements. The challenge now lies in Mbah continuing to surpass expectations, further advancing the growth and prosperity of Enugu State.
