Anambra Police Present N8m Cheques to Families of Fallen Officers

The Anambra State Police Command has disbursed over N8 million in cheques to the families of 13 police officers who lost their lives while serving in the line of duty.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, made the presentations on Friday during the command’s monthly briefing held at the CP’s Conference Hall in Awka.

According to a statement issued on Saturday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the beneficiaries included the family of an Inspector who was tragically shot by a “friendly force” at a police observation point along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway near Danaks Fuel Station, as well as 12 other families.

Ikenga explained that the initiative, under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes, was spearheaded by the Inspector-General of Police to support the families of officers who died in active service.

“The gesture is aimed at easing the burden on the families left behind and also serves to motivate personnel by assuring them that their welfare remains a priority for the leadership of the Force,” the statement read.

During the event, CP Orutugu expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police for his steadfast commitment to the welfare of officers. He also advised the recipients to wisely invest the funds to help cushion the financial impact on the dependants of the deceased.

The meeting also featured security updates from Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers across the state, with discussions on new strategies to bolster safety and maintain law and order.

Additionally, the gathering included brief lectures delivered by representatives from a leading insurance company, as well as officers overseeing the Police National Housing Fund, pensions, and operational strategy.

Reassuring residents, CP Orutugu pledged that the command would continue to intensify efforts to ensure peace and security throughout Anambra State.
