NCAA Cracks Down on Unruly Passengers After Mid-Flight Assault

According to Ireporter Online, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced plans to intensify sanctions against unruly passengers amid a sharp rise in disruptive incidents at airports and onboard flights.

The warning follows a disturbing case on August 10, when a female passenger on an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos assaulted cabin crew and security staff mid-air. Footage circulating on social media captured the visibly agitated passenger attacking airline personnel during the flight.

In a statement on Monday, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mike Achimugu, stressed that air travel regulations must be respected without exception. He warned that the era of leniency was over, vowing “robust ramifications and enforcement actions” for offenders.

Achimugu urged Nigerians to observe the same discipline in local flights as they do abroad, adding that the authority would accelerate its response to safety and security breaches.

Ibom Air confirmed it has permanently banned the passenger, describing her behaviour as a “serious threat” to crew, passengers, and aircraft safety. The airline reiterated that safeguarding lives remains its highest priority.

The incident occurred just days after veteran Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM 1, was accused of spilling alcohol on airport staff while boarding a ValueJet flight in Abuja.

The NCAA disclosed that it will also expand sensitisation campaigns to educate travellers on their responsibilities, while urging all aviation stakeholders to tighten enforcement measures to curb unruly conduct.
