ABUJA POLICE STRIKE BACK: 50 Arrested In Major Crime Sweep
The Abuja Police Command has reported the apprehension of 50 alleged thieves and the recovery of various items, including manhole covers, solar street lights, vehicles, and more. “The Command has effectively captured groups of suspects involved in the vandalism and theft of manhole covers across the territory. Our operatives executed a targeted operation, resulting in the detention of fifty (50) suspects and the recovery of twenty-five (25) manhole covers, three (3) vehicles, stolen solar street lights, galvanized rods for flyover construction, along with other tools used for vandalizing government installations. These were recovered from various hotspots in Kabusa, Garki, Mabushi, and Wuse.
“Investigations revealed that these individuals are part of a larger network that sells stolen manhole covers to scrap dealers. Their criminal activities jeopardize public safety by creating hazards on roads and sidewalks while compromising the integrity of public infrastructure.

- 1 Volkswagen sport bus (Reg. No. BJK 592 XA) modified into a diesel tanker
- 1 Toyota Carina II (Reg. No. RBC 312 JL)
- Several iron rebar rods
- 9 car tire rims
- 1 fire extinguisher
- 11 plasma TV sets
- Several decoders and remotes
- 13 bags of cement
- 2 reinforced iron doors
- 3 pumping machines believed to be used for extracting diesel
- 2 car batteries
- 1 photo frame
- 1 pack of tiles
- 16 plastic chairs
- 3 generators
- 1 aluminum ladder
- 1 wheelbarrow
- 1 roll of roofing sheets
- 2 gas cylinders
- 1 indoor and outdoor AC unit
- 4 sumo water pumps
- Several iron cutting tools
The broad range and volume of recovered items reveal the extensive and organized nature of these syndicates, which have significantly damaged public infrastructure and services in the Federal Capital Territory.
“I want to stress that the FCT Police Command, alongside our partner security agencies, operates with a zero-tolerance policy towards vandalism and theft that threaten public infrastructure and safety. This success highlights our steadfast commitment to safeguarding the essential infrastructure of the Federal Capital Territory. We will continue to ensure that all those responsible for these criminal actions are brought to justice, with ongoing efforts to dismantle such enclaves
