Additionally, he warned that anyone found purchasing or using the stolen manhole covers or other damaged public utilities will also face arrest and prosecution for economic sabotage and endangering the lives of Nigerians.

This information was shared in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, on Monday.

He praised the security agencies for their swift and effective response, describing their cooperative efforts as “fantastic” and reassuring residents that their safety and property are being safeguarded.

Wike further thanked Nigerians for their patriotism in reporting vandalism, emphasizing that “protecting public facilities is primarily the responsibility of Nigerians, who are the rightful owners and users of these amenities.”

He added: “Those involved in the theft and purchase of amenities intended for the benefit of Nigerians are our fellow citizens. They live among us and are identifiable. It is crucial for patriotic Nigerians to expose these individuals before they can commit their harmful acts.”

Approximately 50 suspected vandals have been arrested for the theft of manhole covers in the FCT, with 25 vandalized covers recovered by security forces.
