Ibadan Stampede: Makinde Promises Legal Action Against Suspects
IBADAN – Oyo State Governor, Engr. ‘Seyi Makinde, has reiterated his determination to ensure that those responsible for the devastating stampede during the Christmas funfair at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, will be brought to justice, irrespective of their status…READ MORE…
The tragic event resulted in the death of at least 35 minors, as confirmed by the Oyo State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Adewale Osifeso.
Speaking at the 2025 Annual Inter-faith Service for state employees held at the secretariat in Ibadan on Monday, Governor Makinde stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law within the state.
Responding to concerns about similar incidents in Anambra and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that did not result in prosecutions, he emphasized, “Regardless of the accountability in other states, in Oyo State, the law will take its course.”
While he indicated that he does not oppose bail for the suspects, he highlighted the necessity of following judicial procedures, insisting that accountability is crucial for ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
Reflecting on the past year’s troubles, Makinde remarked, “2024 began on a tragic note for us here in Oyo State, with an explosion in Bodija on January 16 that affected my office and echoed throughout Ibadan. Then, towards the end of the year, we faced the stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, claiming 35 innocent lives. May we never see such sorrow again in Oyo State.”
Addressing those questioning Oyo State’s pursuit of justice when other states had not, he responded, “Oyo State is distinct from Anambra State, and justice must prevail, regardless of status.”
He reiterated that the judiciary will manage the case, saying, “If you believe bail can be granted while awaiting trial, I have no objections to that. However, the suspects must face trial.”
The governor also discussed ongoing security threats posed by bandits entering the state from the northwestern regions, assuring residents of his commitment to combatting all types of insecurity.
He expressed appreciation to security forces for their commitment to maintaining peace in the state. “2024 has been challenging regarding safety and security, with issues of fire, armed robbery, and kidnappings. We will intensify our efforts in 2025 to address these challenges,” he stated.
Makinde mentioned a special operation currently underway to target wrongdoers moving into the state and reassured citizens of the government’s dedication to confronting these threats.
He urged the public to report any suspicious activities to authorities, stressing, “It is in our collective interest.”
He also announced that his administration would soon complete discussions on revising pension remuneration in light of the new minimum wage and related adjustments.
In her welcome address, the state Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, commended the governor for his policies favoring workers and encouraged employees to remain diligent in their roles.
Goodwill messages were delivered by various leaders, including the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, and representatives of state labor unions, who praised the governor for his initiatives to enhance worker welfare and urged him to continue this positive direction.
