Tinubu’s Bold Decisions: Kalu Declares A New Era For Nigeria
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has expressed his belief that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was justified in disregarding the economic policy recommendations from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank…READ MORE…
Speaking at an event at the Arochukwu Local Government residence of Chief Sunday Ugwa, Kalu highlighted significant advancements, such as the overhaul of the Port Harcourt and Warri Refineries and the stabilization of the exchange rate, attributing Nigeria’s progress to the President’s rejection of IMF and World Bank economic frameworks.
Kalu explained that Tinubu’s economic reforms—including the removal of fuel subsidies, the liberalization of the foreign exchange market, and the deregulation of the petroleum downstream sector—are crucial for addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges, which he believes primarily arise from domestic factors.
“President Tinubu has taken bold steps, such as eliminating the subsidy that former President Olusegun Obasanjo hesitated to remove and merging the exchange rates. It’s time to reassess governance models in Africa and other developing nations,” Kalu stated.
He emphasized that not all recommendations from the IMF and World Bank should be accepted, arguing that many can be misguided and advocating for homegrown solutions to resolve Nigeria’s economic issues.
Kalu commended Tinubu for making decisions that past leaders avoided, stressing their necessity for the country’s prosperity. To illustrate his point, he noted the recent decline in fuel prices, suggesting that the President’s reforms are beginning to show positive outcomes.
“There have been significant decreases in the prices of petrol and diesel compared to previous months. Other inflated prices will also drop. The Warri Refinery, which had been inactive for over two decades, is now operational,” he said.
He drew parallels with the “Asian Tigers”—Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong—who also ignored IMF and World Bank programs yet achieved remarkable economic growth.
Kalu urged the youth to engage in the democratic process to prevent the election of inept leaders. “The Asian Tigers charted their own course, and their progress is evident. We must all work to uphold democracy, which benefits everyone,” he urged young people to actively participate in democracy, warning against complacency that allows unqualified candidates to be elected.
He reiterated the need for a shift in Nigeria’s economic strategies through regional competition as a catalyst for growth, using China’s success as an example. Kalu stressed that success and development require committed effort from both the government and citizens.
“We cannot thrive without engaging in competition. Despite criticisms regarding human rights, China has maintained a consistent annual growth rate of 10 percent for the past 35 years,” he noted.
Chief Sunday Ugwu, the senator’s host, expressed appreciation for Kalu’s visit and acknowledged his contributions to community development. “Your impact on our people is commendable. The warm welcome you received reflects your acceptance and the affection people have for you,” he remarked
