Police Detain School Owner After Explosion In Abuja Claims Two Lives

The blast occurred around 11 a.m. and reportedly involved an IED brought by three individuals who had visited Ashimu earlier in the day.

Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the FCT police, confirmed that two of the visitors lost their lives when the device detonated while they were attempting to tamper with it on the school’s veranda.

Additionally, a third man and a female vendor suffered serious injuries and are currently receiving medical attention under police supervision.

In a statement, Adeh expressed the police command’s regret over the tragic event, which took place on January 6, 2025, around 11 a.m. at the Tsangagyar Sani Uthman Islamiyya School in the Byazhin area.

Following a distress call from the village chief of Kuchibuyi, a police team, including explosive ordnance disposal specialists and the Area Commander of Kubwa, quickly arrived at the scene to secure the area for investigation while ensuring the safety of local residents.

During the rescue operation, victims were swiftly evacuated and transported to a hospital for urgent care.

Early investigations have indicated that the three men who visited Ashimu were from Katsina and are suspected of having brought the explosive device with them. Tragically, two of them died in the explosion, while the third man and the female trader remain hospitalized with serious injuries.

The FCT Bomb Squad has confirmed it was indeed an IED explosion, with remnants of the device having been recovered.

Ashimu has been taken into custody for questioning, and further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.

Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu has urged the community to stay alert and report any suspicious activities or items to law enforcement officials.
