Anambra Erupts in Outrage as Businessman ‘Fish Magnet’ Is Murdered—Govt Vows Justice

The Anambra State Government has strongly condemned the recent killing of a popular businessman, Ifesinachi Onyekere—widely known as “Fish Magnet”—describing the incident as both shocking and appalling. According to IReporter Online, Onyekere was abducted from his residence in the Ezinifite area of Okpuno, Awka South Local Government Area, by armed assailants on the night of Saturday, July 26, and later murdered.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, expressed the government’s deep sympathy to the grieving family and affirmed that justice will be pursued with unwavering resolve. Mefor, who paid a condolence visit to the bereaved mother—Mrs. Esther Onyekesi, the Woman Leader of the state’s All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)—stated that the Soludo-led administration views the killing as a direct assault on the new security framework established in the state.

He disclosed that security forces are already closing in on the perpetrators and have made headway by recovering the vehicle used in the abduction. Mefor stressed that no one involved in such a heinous act will escape justice, adding that the security situation in Anambra has significantly improved since Governor Chukwuma Soludo introduced a revamped security architecture earlier this year.

The commissioner noted that trouble-prone zones now receive rapid tactical responses and that new security outfits—Agunechemba and Operation Udo Ga-Achi—have been deployed to confront rising threats. According to IReporter Online, Mefor assured the family that the state government stands with them, vowing that justice will be achieved not only for the victim but also for the entire state.

“This government will not rest until justice is served. The death of Martin Ifesinachi Onyekere is not just a family tragedy—it is an attack on the peace of Anambra. The entire state will get justice,” he declared.

Accompanying the Commissioner on the condolence visit was the Chairman of Nnewi South Local Government Area, Van George Ezeogidi.
