The Bauchi State Government has declared Monday, August 17, 2026, a work-free day to enable residents to participate in the forthcoming Local Government Council elections across the state.

According to Ireporter Online, the directive applies to civil servants and public sector workers at the local, state and federal levels who are based in Bauchi State. Employees in the banking sector are also covered by the declaration.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Friday by Mukhtar Gidado, Special Adviser to Governor Bala Mohammed on Media and Publicity.

The state government explained that the decision followed the scheduling of the local government elections by the Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission for Monday.

It said the work-free day was aimed at giving eligible residents enough opportunity to exercise their constitutional right to vote without being hindered by official responsibilities.

However, personnel providing essential services have been exempted from the directive and are expected to continue with their duties.

The government also called on residents to cooperate with security agencies and electoral officials to ensure that the elections are conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner.

The statement noted that the measure was intended to promote greater participation in the grassroots democratic process while ensuring that official duties do not prevent eligible voters from casting their ballots.
